The Qur’an: The Divine Revelation

The Qur’an is the literal word of Allah revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through the Angel Jibril (Gabriel) over a period of approximately 23 years. It is preserved in its original language, Arabic, and remains unchanged since its revelation. Allah says:

“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an and indeed, We will be its guardian.”
(Qur’an 15:9)

The Qur’an serves as:

  • A guide for humanity (Qur’an 2:185)

  • A criterion between truth and falsehood (Qur’an 25:1)

  • A healing and mercy for believers (Qur’an 17:82)

It addresses matters of belief, law, morality, history, and spirituality, making it a comprehensive manual for life.

The Sunnah: The Living Example

The Sunnah refers to the teachings, actions, approvals, and character of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. While the Qur’an provides principles and commands, the Sunnah explains and demonstrates how to apply them in practice.

Allah emphasizes the importance of following the Prophet:

“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day.”
(Qur’an 33:21)

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

“I have left among you two matters which you will never go astray as long as you hold fast to them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah.”
(Reported in al-Muwatta’ of Imam Malik)

Relationship Between Qur’an and Sunnah

The Sunnah does not replace the Qur’an; rather, it complements and clarifies it. Scholars explain their relationship in three main ways:

  1. Explanation – The Sunnah explains verses that are general or concise.
Example: The Qur’an commands prayer, but the Sunnah teaches how to pray.

  2. Specification – It specifies general rulings.
Example: The Qur’an orders charity, while the Sunnah details zakat rules.

  3. Legislation – It provides rulings not explicitly stated in the Qur’an but revealed to the Prophet ﷺ through divine inspiration.

Why Both Are Essential

Muslims cannot fully practice Islam using only one source. The Qur’an itself commands obedience to the Messenger:

“Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah.”
(Qur’an 4:80)

Rejecting the Sunnah would mean ignoring the practical example of how Islam is lived. Classical scholars unanimously agreed that authentic Sunnah is binding alongside the Qur’an.

Preservation and Authenticity

Just as the Qur’an was preserved, the Sunnah was carefully transmitted through rigorous methods of verification. Scholars of hadith developed detailed sciences to examine:

  • Chains of narration (isnad)

  • Reliability of narrators

  • Consistency of reports

Collections such as Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are widely recognized for their strict authenticity standards.

Practical Impact in Daily Life

Following the Qur’an and Sunnah shapes a Muslim’s entire life:

  • Worship becomes correct and sincere

  • Character becomes refined

  • Decisions become guided by divine wisdom

  • Society benefits from justice and compassion

They are not merely texts to be read, but guidance to be lived.

Conclusion

The Qur’an and Sunnah together form the complete and preserved guidance of Islam. The Qur’an provides the divine message, while the Sunnah demonstrates its application. Holding firmly to both ensures clarity of belief, correctness of worship, and strength of faith. For Muslims everywhere, they remain timeless sources of light, direction, and mercy.
