Ramadan 1447 H: The Start of the Blessed Month of Fasting

Ramadan is one of the most sacred months in the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a time of fasting, prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal. In 1447 H (2026), the beginning of Ramadan has been officially determined by several religious authorities based on moon sighting and astronomical calculations.

In Indonesia, for example, the official government announcement from the Ministry of Religious Affairs confirmed that 1 Ramadan 1447 H falls on Thursday, 19 February 2026, following a formal sidang isbat (moon sighting confirmation) where it was determined that the crescent moon (hilal) was not yet visible on the evening of 17 February 2026, thus completing the month of Sha’ban at 30 days.

Globally, other communities also confirm Ramadan timing through local moon sighting committees or astronomical predictions. This variation reflects the traditional Islamic practice where different regions may begin Ramadan on slightly different days depending on local moon sightings.

Once Ramadan begins, Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn (fajr) until sunset (maghrib). But fasting is not just a physical exercise—this month is a period for self-discipline, increased prayer, recitation of the Qur’an, charity, and seeking forgiveness. The spiritual atmosphere during Ramadan motivates believers to draw closer to Allah, strengthen their character, and purify their hearts.

This blessed month also carries great rewards, with special nights like Laylat al-Qadr — the Night of Decree — believed to occur during the last ten nights of Ramadan, when worship and supplication are especially meritorious.

As Muslims around the world embark on this sacred journey, Ramadan 1447 H serves as a reminder of patience, compassion, and devotion — qualities that enrich both individual lives and the wider community.
